ebay and paypal are very large, so large they can with impunity ignore a legitimate problem that one of their customers can have. They rotate the people assigned to a claim review until they wear you out. They being very large and you being a small individual fall prey to their busineess practice of shuttling you from one to the other until they can say "Sorry the time has expired" or " We are really concerned ..." but they have obviously not really even read the correspondence.

They prey on your natural trust in them. You are probably an honest person trying to sell or buy on the site. Things go wrong, then you get an email from them which has numerous links. If you see this, this is the strart of the runaround. They have a goal to retain their account recievables, what they earn for your listing. When surfing the Internet you probably take your anonymity
for granted, most of us do.

Tapping phones, listening to confidential conversations,
reading others' e-mail messages seems like something that
only happens in spy movies to "other" people.

However, you probably don't realize just how much
information about yourself has the potential to get
transmitted across the Internet every time you go online.

Every computer connected to the Internet has "ports" that
allow it to connect. A "port" doesn't mean you have a
physical hole or opening in your computer's case or
hardware, but it does mean you have openings through which
information passes back and forth between your computer and
the Internet.

Depending on the type of connection (dial up, LAN, cable,
DSL), you may have several openings for potential mischief
by hackers, malicious code or viruses.

Computers with dedicated connections rate the most at risk.
If someone or something gets into one of these ports and
into your computer, they can potentially watch everything
you do and see all the data you enter, including social
security numbers and credit card information.

The easiest way to defeat this problem involves using a
firewall. Firewalls, simple and inexpensive software
available at virtually any office supply or computer store,
block the most common ports hackers use to enter your
computer.

Firewalls also help you detect and block unauthorized
transmission of information from your computer to the

In the United States, there are about five different types of health insurance available: traditional health insurance; preferred provider organizations or PPOs; point-of-service plans or POS; health management organizations or HMOs; and most recently, health savings accounts or HSAs. With so many types of health insurance, it may be confusing trying to figure out which one best fits your needs, so thoroughly research each and speak with a professional if you need clarification.

Traditional health insurance is the one that most people think of when they think of health insurance. You pay the insurance company a premium every month, and if you have an accident or need for health coverage, you have a deductible amount you must pay and then the insurance company picks up the rest of the bill. You often have an inexpensive office and/or prescription co-pay with traditional health insurance.

With people living longer, health insurance companies began to look for more ways to reduce their costs, developing different health plans such as PPOs. PPOs are plans which will cover nearly all of your medical expenses as long as you stay within a preferred network of physicians or hospitals. This network creates a “preferred provider” list that you can choose from. Treatment outside this network of providers is covered but only at a reduced rate, meaning you end up paying more to see a physician outside the network. By limiting the physicians and hospitals covered in their network, the insurance company can control, to an extent, their costs and lower your premiums. POS plans work like PPOs, but require you to have a primary care physician through whom you can receive referrals for specialists. If you need to see a neurologist or a dermatologist, you must first visit your primary care physician for an initial diagnosis in order to receive a referral to a specialist for a more thorough diagnosis. POS plans also have a preferred provider network, and if you choose to visit a specialist or physician outside that network, your coverage will be limited.

HMOs combine a stricter version of PPOs and POS plans. HMOs have a defined list of physicians, often much smaller than PPO networks, which you may see. You will not be covered at all if you see a physician outside your HMO network. Furthermore, you must also get a referral from your primary care HMO physician to see any specialist. However, these restrictions mean that you pay an extra low or no monthly premium.

HSAs were recently signed into law by President Bush. You can deposit money into a special non-taxed, interest-gaining savings account that must be used for medical expenses. The ideal situation for an HSA is to combine the account with a low-cost, high-deductible insurance plan. The savings account is designed to allow you to cover the high deductible if you find the need to cover expensive medical costs while the insurance company will pick up the rest of the bill.

This past Sunday I had an enlighening conversation with a good longtime friend from my hometown Port Arthur. We discussed how so many keep getting caught in what I termed as the "traps of life". he pointed out that the main thing people really don't see is that we actually do have a choice in life.

Now this may sound a bit simplistic -duh- but much of the time when caught up in a difficult moment we forget about that and worse allow emotions to lead our way when emotions are just signifyers although we mistake them as justifyers. I ran across something that sheds more light on this thing about choices...hope it helps.

We all have little things -like bad habbits for instance- about us that we'd like to change...but procrastination along with other excuses keeps getting in the way. Why is it so hard to make a true change...as you're about to learn...that question in and of itself is the wrong question...the right question is how would it be if we could easily make a change literally in a few seconds right now!

That is one formula, that I keep seeing other NLP enthusiasts forget to use! What's better: a 3bedroom house for $200,000 or a 3bedroom house for $12,000? The answer is obvious,but why do most families end up paying the bigger price stretched out over a decade or so?
I never really understood real estate as a youngster. I simply thought you get grown,get a job,get married and buy a house,then one day I found out about this thing called a mortgage. People who supposedly own their homes pay a monthly fee(mortgage note) until it adds up to the total purchase price. And it doesn't stop there because on top of that there's interest added to those monthly notes which means you end up paying more than the actual purchase price. That $200,000 house now becomes $275,000 or more.

How can you get around this?

Like the old saying goes'"where there's a will there's a way." All over America everyday mortgages are NOT being paid up and when that happens the law basically says that would-be home owner forfeits the right to its possession. This starts a process known as foreclosure. That property goes back to the selling party who still wants that property to be paid off. eBay Infrastucture
A series of service disruptions in 1999 caused real problems for eBay's business. Over the course of three days, overloaded servers intermittently shut down, meaning users couldn't check auctions, place bids or complete transactions during that period. Buyers, sellers and eBay were very unhappy, and a complete restructuring of eBay's technological architecture followed.
In 1999, eBay was one massive database server and a few separate systems running the search function. In 2005, eBay is about 200 database servers and 20 search servers.

The architecture is a type of grid computing that allows for both error correction and growth. With the exception of the search function, everything about eBay can actually run on approximately 50 servers -- Web servers, application servers and data-storage systems. Each server has between six and 12 microprocessors. These 50 or so servers run separately, but they talk to each other, so everybody knows if there is a problem somewhere. eBay can simply add servers to the grid as the need arises.

While the majority of the site can run on 50 servers, eBay has four times that. The 200 servers are housed in sets of 50 in four locations, all in the United States. When you're using eBay, you may be talking to any one of those locations at any time -- they all store the same data. If one of the systems crashes, there are three others to pick up the slack.

When you're on the eBay Web site and you click on a listing for a Persian rug, your computer talks to Web servers, which talk to application servers, which pull data from storage servers so you can find out what the latest bid price is and how much time is left in the auction. eBay has local partners in many countries who deliver eBay's static data to cut down on download time, and there are monitoring systems in 45 cities around the world that constantly scan for problems in the network.

I'm Impressed...This NLP Stuff Really Works

I was really stressed out trying to figure how I'll handle all my responsibilities...getting them done on time. Thoughts just began running into each other like a congested highway traffic jam.

How in this hell am I going to get all this done...I know, I know: PRIORITIZE! But that ain't working today! What about meditating? Well, that's the type of thing you do in the privacy of your home, not while you're in the middle of a busy work/school day.

It's an improved field of psychology that boasts of fixing social,emotional, and various forms of mental problems in less than half the time of ordinary therapy. It has NOTHING to do with you laying on some so-called doctor's coutch expressing your problems for hours with nothing to show for it except a mega-bill.

Well anyway, I tried a couple of their subliminal sound tracks and wouldn't you know it...my mind simply freed itself. I mean I feel like I'm reclinig on a feathery sofa in deep outer space just watching the planets travel! It's not that I no longer have those responsibilities, it's just that it doesn't bother me like it did just a few minutes earlier...it'll all be taken care of at just the right time --which will manifest on its own. Things About Google You Probably Didn't Know

...Google is the only multi-billion-dollar company in the world that is also a spelling mistake. Back in 1997 its co-founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, were graduate computer science students at Stanford. They were working on an insanely cool new search engine, they wanted to incorporate it as a company and they needed to find a name. A fellow student suggested they use the name given to what is the largest number: google. They looked up the name on the internet, found that it wasn’t taken and registered their brand-new brand, Google.com. The next morning they found that the reason why the name hadn’t been taken was because it should be spelt googol — and that Googol.com had, of course, been bagged.

Lesser men might have considered that a bad omen, but Page and Brin are not bad omen kind of guys. The Wallace and Gromit of the information age, they are now worth more than $10 billion each.

Google does not search the internet. If it did, the internet would grind to a halt under the strain of all the searching taking place, because Google alone (not to mention the competition) makes upwards of 100m searches every day. Instead the program searches a copy of the internet downloaded onto its own computers. A full circuit of all the web pages in the world takes roughly a month, which is why the information on Google is often a few days old.

Having copied the internet, it then indexes it by charting every word on a web page, where it stands in relation to other words, whether or not a word is listed in a title, whether it is listed in a special typeface, how frequently it is listed on the page and so on. There are more than 100 of these criteria and Google gives a numeric weight to every one of them. When a query arrives — which it does at the rate of many times every second — Google searches the index and lists pages in order of relevance, usually within half a second or so.
Even if you didn’t know a thing about computers, you could tell this involves a truly scary amount of computational power. When the program was conceived, Page thought he would be able to download an entire copy of the internet to his own PC. That turned out not to be the case: Page and Brin ended up having to scrounge, cadge, rustle up and “borrow” every scrap of computational power they could find at Stanford to gather the necessary data.

What they learnt in the process became one of their great strengths. Google does not run on huge expensive mainframe computers, but on a large number of bog-standard over-the-counter PCs. When one breaks, it is replaced. Without their experience in student bodging, the founders of Google would never have learnt how to put together a computer cluster that combined such replaceable simplicity with such computational muscle.

Traffic to the site grew at great speed, all without a cent spent on marketing. Google managed to build a huge business through small ads. Next time you do a search on Google, have a look at the “sponsored links” on the right of the results. These are paid advertisements. The ads have been bid for by people who bid for specific words, or combinations of words: 75 cents for “digital camera”, but $1.08 for “digital cameras” (because people who click on the plural are more likely to buy).

Google’s ads are so effective at generating income because they tap directly into the intentions of people looking for things. An ad in any normal medium is, to a degree, a form of broadcasting: it will appear in front of many people who have no interest. The Google ads appear only in front of people already looking for the thing they are advertising; this is something nobody foresaw about the internet, that its “killer app” (killer application) was the ability to find services and information. The received wisdom in the business was that a search was a “commodity”, something it was simple to buy from the cheapest provider. In disproving that, Google showed that it was wired straight into the global id.

Is Google a good thing? The geek in me wants to say yes. It has certainly made finding information incomparably easier. Some of the information is even true . . . Actually, that’s not fair, but a lot of what is on the net is false and the Google-derived mistake is something you now notice. One example occurred on the death of Hunter S Thompson when several newspapers shared with us President Richard Nixon’s opinion that “Hunter S Thompson represented the dark, venal and incurably violent side of the American character”. Except Nixon didn’t say that about Thompson; Thompson said it about Nixon. But a site giving the line the wrong way round was the first one up on Google.

Despite such glitches, Google is invaluable. I’ve used it on a more or less daily basis for the past five years. Google Scholar, which searches academic papers, is very useful. The powerful calculator feature will do advanced maths as well as highly practical things such as converting square feet into metres. Google News terrifies conventional news organisations. Google Earth isn’t particularly useful but it is brutally cool: you begin with a satellite view and gradually descend to Earth, homing in with a level of detail which can give you a view of your own house (or a secret military installation). Froogle, the shopping search service, has a feature which chills the blood of conventional retailers: when you see something you want to buy, you can text its name to 64664 and Froogle will text back the best price it can find.

Technologically, Google is an amazing thing. As for whether it is a good thing, that depends on what happens next. A strength of the firm — its rootedness in graduate student nerd culture — is also a weakness in the form of a certain arrogance. Google Book Search, its plan to scan all the world’s books, sounds ambitious, to put it mildly, but Google has the resources and determination to do it. It is digitising millions of books and is already providing access to out-of-copyright volumes. It also started digitising copyrighted books in the United States until it was stopped by a lawsuit from the American Association of Publishers.

The plan is not simply to give the books away: although the whole book will be scanned and stored, only specific fragments of text will be displayed. It will be the best shop window for obscure texts. Besides, isn’t the company policy “Don’t be evil”? But to publishers there is something outrageously hypocritical about the contrast between Google’s ferocious protection of its own intellectual property rights and its contempt for everyone else’s. What ’s to stop Google giving free online access to the books once they are scanned? At the moment Google says it has no intention of providing access to this content; but why should anybody believe it? This is why Google’s activities in China have the potential to be such a disaster for the company. So far everyone who has invested in Google has made out like the proverbial bandit; but one day the share price will drop and people who have bought shares will find they have lost money. It is then that Google’s leaders will come under pressure to find some uses for that goldmine of personal data.

As for privacy in relation to governments, the company’s existing privacy policy says that “we may share information” if “we conclude that we are required by law or have a good faith belief that access, preservation or disclosure of such information is reasonably necessary to protect the rights, property or safety of Google, its users or the public”. You don’t have to be Diogenes the Cynic to think that this gives Google the latitude to do pretty much whatever it wants.

Google is cool, but Google has the potential to destroy the publishing industry, the newspaper business, high street retailing and our privacy. Not that it will necessarily do any of these things, but for the first time, considered soberly, they are technologically possible. The company is rich and determined and is not going away any time soon. It knows what it is doing technologically; socially, though, it can’t possibly know and I don’t think anyone else can either.

real choice, is becoming aware of your fixed paterns of perception,

To develop this "meta" awareness is a powerful tool to peel away old,
trapped ways of thinking, acting and responding and believing. It makes
it MUCH easier to move up ANY learning curve for any skill set.

You see, technical skill IS important. But many people offer fairly
good models for technical skill(how to sell, how to seduce, how to get
fit, etc) in different areas of life, yet few people get real changes or
the huge leaps they want from following this advice.

Sometimes, the advice is lacking(as is the case with my rip-off,
cheap-jack, bullshit imitators and "competitors")

But just as often, even with good "advice" and good model for new
technical skills, the person trying to follow this advice has a bigger
problem: they want to really change an area of life that has been deeply
emotionally challenging, evoking lots of fear, self-doubt, personal
limits etc.

What can often happen is that the new advice, new skills, new ways of
thinking, feeling, acting and believing are filtered THROUGH the old
emotions, experiences, beliefs, etc

This means that people seldom consistently will act out the new skills
from the right frame of mind. They will be fighting themselves, their
old habits, tendencies, etc.

A metaphor I use is, if I give you a pair of glasses dipped in dog
shit, EVERYTHING WILL LOOK BROWN. That is why methods that assist in
building clear, unfettered awarness can help us keep old responses, beliefs,
behaviors, choices at bay and "in the freezer" LONG enough for new way
to take hold, and long enough for us to move up new learning curves
because we can see the new skills, beliefs, responses THROUGH CLEAR EYES

This is doubly necessary when the new ways are very different from the
old ways and require major shifts. Remember, the further something
stands from how you are used to acting, thinking, feeling and believing,
the greater the chance for HUGE leaps. Also, the greater the chance for
old ways to leap back up, unless you have a practice and discipline to
deal with them.

I'll say that again: practice and discipline. Onward... Anything you
do to bring your habitual patterns into your awareness(without anger,
fear or reaction) is useful. This is why I am challenging you to go from
one extreme to another and to pay attention to flows of feeling that
trigger all of it; the awareness of feeling flow is key to knowing when
you are slipping into old patterns of behavior and is also key to
designing in NEW ones!

How To Use Breath And Energy To Immediately Set You Free!

Does this make sense? Now, here is the next exercise to do: As you
know, I talk alot about a spot on the body located about 2-3 inches below
the navel, between the navel and the public bone. If you've studied any
martial arts, occult or "esoteric" disciplines, this spot is called
different names: the kanda, the t'an t'ien, the hara, etc. Without
getting into intricate explanations, you just need to view it as a major
power center in the body and a major awareness center as well. So....stand
upright. Feet planted about 2 feet apart. Take a deep inhale, and as
you do, imagine the breath is moving in a soft line of energy feeling
down the front of your body and swirling in the t'an t'ien. It doesn't
matter if it is clockwise or counter-clockwise. Find out which works best
for you.

Exhale by pulling your belly toward your spine and as you do, send
strong line of energy from the small of your back up the center of your
spine, out through the top of your head.

Practicing Staying Present To The Now...just ONE MORE NEED for 2006

Transformational Counseling is about assisting others to transform their life. Transformational Counseling is a process of assisting others to learn how to let go of the past and live fully in the present. To live fully in the present is to become awaken to what is truly real and to our own natural power. Much of our life is spent living in the past, and in the process, attempting to fix it, to make it something that it is or was not. It is from living in the past that we also attempt to create our future, the result always being a living of life as it was in the past. Transformation takes place when we learn to exist in and be present to the Now.

The practice of staying present to our natural power and to that which is real is becoming conscious to what is so, to the Now, to the present. What is so, the Now, has no meaning and exists outside of thought and language. As human beings we tend to give meaning to everything, including other people, ourselves and even life itself. It is in our meaning making that we leave the present and create our life from the past, a life that can be filled with a great deal of anxiety, fear and stress. What is so merely exists and it is in the experience of the Now that we begin to live a life of power and freedom, a life and way of being free from our past.

A specific technique that is very powerful for practicing staying present to the Now is meditation. It is in meditation that one creates the space to experience a very deep state of relaxation, a state that is very healing to both the mind and body. As we know, in meditation ones metabolism slows down, including heart rate and blood pressure. The consistent practice of meditation will reduce anxiety and stress. For some the practice of meditation allows them to access true Being. For others it is way of reconnecting to the Spirit within us. It is in the consistent practice of meditation that the subject and object distinction inherent in language, thought and meaning making collapses thereby resulting in our access to the present, to the Now.

The meditative process can be enhanced by the use of therapeutic relaxation music. Music has always been a very powerful modality for promoting a very deep state of relaxation and even healings. I have found that musical compositions that are harmonically slow, repetitious, with sustained voices, which are rhythmically, random in tempo assists an individual in experiencing a very deep state of relaxation. A second important component of the use of therapeutic relaxation music is the use of binaural audio tones that have been interwoven into the music. The binaural tones, through a process referred to as entrainment or frequency following, gently guides or directs the mind/body to generate more of the targeted frequency of brain wave activity for an even more profound state of relaxation.

The meditative process of practicing staying present to the Now is as follows:

1. Take a comfortable position in an upright sitting position.

2. Allow your legs and arms to be open.

3. Allow your eyes to focus upon a chosen object. The chosen object could be a candle light in a darkened room or any point that you choose.

4. As you focus on the chosen object, allow your muscles to slowly relax from the top of your head to the tips of your toes.

5. Take three slow deep breathes in through your nose as you inhale. Hold each breath to the mental count of four. Slowly exhale each breath out through your mouth. Continue to breath at a slow pace after the three breaths.

6. Continue to focus on the chosen object. When your mind wanders to some thought or thoughts slowly and gently bring it back to your focused concentration upon the chosen object. Simply let go of the thoughts that arise. The thoughts are from the past. Stay focused to what is so.

7. Continue the practice for a prescribed period of time and then go about your daily activities. Each day that you practice you may even choose to lengthen the time you spend with this technique.

The ability to stay in the present, to access the Now, can be enhanced with the consistent practice of meditation. What this will necessitate is one making the practice of meditation apart of his or her daily schedule. With the consistent practice of meditation one will also create the ability to stay even more present to what is so even when not actively engaged in the meditative process. It is through a commitment to the practice of meditation on a daily basis that one will begin to live more fully in the Now.

Life in this current world is a struggle..but there's one thing that can make it a bit easier. It's not love...respect...nor is it anything religious. It's MONEY or to quote a famous rap group (Wu-Tang) it's C-R-E-A-M because "Cash Rules Everything Around Me!"

By no means am I some sort of Ebineezer Scrooge capitalist...I've simply noticed my whole life that we can't seem to maneuver around CREAM. Without it loved ones leave you...no-one realy respects the person who has no CREAM...and every church or religious organization --regardless of how strong the spiritual message is-- fails without it. I've experienced all this& then some! I didn't make these rules,it simply is what it is no matter where you live.

I consider myself to be a bit more spiritual than most and so I've learned that there are certain traits one needs to possess/learn in order to attract money. Also,certain priorities in ones life needs to be put in the correct perspective. This is why many who work very hard and do the so-called "right things" still have no CREAM. Attracting money is a science which must be mastered! There are resources available to help one sort all this out...just do a search on this site and you'll see. Once you've done that,then it's time to decide on the money-making vehicle that suits you best.

One thing's for sure: working a 9 to 5 for the rest of your life just won't cut it. People have been there and done that with nothing to show for it. Nowadays,a retirement income is no longer guaranteed and bills,taxes,and other crap isn't getting any cheaper. The only solution is to do for self...write your own paychecks. You must have some sort of business where you call the shots.

Rita On My Mind

I posted about how hurricane Katrina has affected my hometown Port Arthur,Tx and then Rita came...these days are truly filled with great obstacles.

Because of the massive devastation Rita did to P.A. I have been forced to relocate to Houston. Thankfully,my family members nor I was hurt...only our material possessions which of course can easily be replaced.

I'm seriously considering making Houston my new home;afterall,I was born here and even lived here on my own after I graduated from high school and now that I've been back for a while I really don't want to leave. Why? Because EveryThingINeed is here!

Houston is the 4th largest city...duh!

Having an internet-based business makes it even easier to relocate...I mean all I NEED is a computer or some other device that logs on to the internet and I'm back in business without missing a beat. The Effects of Hurricane Katrina on Port Arthur,Tx

Before I get into the meat of this post,let me start by apologizing for the lengthy time between posts...things have just been real hectic down here on the Gulf Coast.

Katrina has brought and is steady bringing changes to my small city--Port Arthur. Many families who lost everything to the violent hurricane have been relocated to this small place. They've been spread out among the various apartment complexes throughout P.A.(Port Arthur)with guaranteed rental/utility payments for up to 6 months...in cases with larger families those payments are extended to up to a year.

This actually turns a terrible and horrific event into a blessing in disguise for many who would have never had a chance for a new start if New Orleans would NOT have gotten hit. Those families most affected were definitely the poorest of the poor...who just happen to be Black like me.

My heart pours compassion out to all those who have lost loved ones and my advice is to make the best of the new beginings now being given. One good way to honor those who lost their lives is to NOT give up!

If we carefully study history we will see that things on this earth cannot be rebuilt until the old has been destroyed...unfortunately lives are always lost during the process. But despair NOT...for many lives --just like other things on the earth-- shall/will be rebuilt! This has always been the WAY of our Universe.

One thing that frustrates me is the negative tension amongst already P.A. residents and N.O.(New Orleans)residents. Some locals feel greatly neglected as far as recieving assistance because all attention along with resources seem to be going ONLY to N.O. natives. Many are also worried about the crime&violence increasing.

To P.A. locals--of which I am one: understand the ramifications of this disaster...how would you feel if you were in the shoes of someone who lost everything? You would want HELP from wherever you could get it. We must stop thinking patterns that are imbedded with negativity and replace them with those that contain compassion.

It's no secret that this current world structure has always been SLOW when it comes to helping the poor. This is supposed to be the wealthiest nation on the planet who immediately gave BILLIONS to Tsunami victims far across the oceans,yet was VERY slow to give to Katrina victims right here! This has led many to believe class and race were the factors for this and it definitely looked that way.

This led to a revelation or epiphany if you will: since for many years the poor and truly downtrodden --especially Black people-- were denied the justice of recieving any type of reparations such as that which was given to other races of people this world has did evil to...the forces of nature(GOD) has literally forced them to give!

I see this as SUPREME JUSTICE!

To the N.O. residents now here: any time a new entity is inserted into an existing structure there is always tension...call it "fear of the unknown" if you will. The best thing we can do is respect one another's cultural differences;thereby,evolving our entire culture here in Port Arthur as a whole...embrace the new. To goto war with it will destoy the whole of us altogether because the new is already here.

As for the potential rise in crime&violence...there's always the possibility of that simply because of the high rate if dissatisfaction with life itself. As long as disatisfaction exists there will be those who will do ANYTHING to be satsfied. The bottom line is that we must learn to repect one another. Although I know the destruction isn't completely over yet...we don't have to allow ourselves to be agents in/of the destruction.

It seemed such a great deal that I actually felt a bitskeptical and thought I smelled a "scam." But, like the 5-year old, I really wanted that bike, I mean "mimio board!"

What Is An Eproduct?

Many people still don't know the answer to this question...so I thought I'd break it down.

Simply put...an eproduct is ANY product that has to be downloaded from a webpage or computer file in order for you to use it. They're also known as infoproducts or digital products. Ebooks are also considered as eproducts.

Consumers are clearly getting more comfortable using the Web to shop, The Washington Post reported today. "Both consumers and merchants are becoming ever more confident on the Internet, fueling new hybrid shopping patterns and marketing methods that blend the online and off-line worlds. This year(2003) a number of Internet-only retailers are adding print catalogues, stamping their brand names on products at traditional stores, and in some cases opening bricks-and-mortar stores. At the same time, traditional retailers are making it easier for shoppers to buy their products online and pick them up in the stores. Some are doing more on their floors to drive shoppers to their Web sites," the Post article said.

"This is the first time in my research where consumers do not seem to care whether it's e-based or brick-and-mortar based," C. Britt Beemer , chairman of market research firm America's Research Group , told the Post. And for those consumers too worried about the mechanics of e-commerce, a new class is being offered in the Milwaukee area to teach people how to shop online. The Franklin Community Education and Recreation Department and the Muskego Parks and Recreation Department are offering a course on Dec. 3 called "Let Your Fingers Do The Shopping," the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported recently. (This sounds like an advertiser's dream, but no details are provided in the article on whether advertisers are underwriting the class.)

"Participants will be taken on tours of some of the major retail chain Web sites along with sites from smaller businesses. Then they'll learn how to order online with credit cards, and talk about shipping options and how orders are confirmed by e-mail," the article said. "For a lot of people, when they place a credit card (order) online, there's this automatic fear that somebody's going to steal their life savings away," Joe Schoen , computer coordinator for the Franklin rec department, told the newspaper. Of course, those wary Wisconsin-ites are smart to worry about e-commerce, as online shopping proves it isn't immune from consumer complaints. A Digital Marketing Services survey conducted for America Online concludes that Nashville, Tenn. is the nation's top city for online shopping. That's right, the capital of country music tops New York, San Francisco and every other wired town you can name.

Over the past year, the survey found that "online shoppers surveyed in the top 10 cities spent more time researching purchases or browsing, up 44 percent from last year, or up to 23 times a month. They also spent more online, up 18 percent from 2002, with the average consumer spending $235 a month. And while such big cities as Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco are to be found on the AOL list, it fell to their midsize sisters to dominate, with Nashville, Tenn., No. 1," The Miami Herald said in its coverage of the survey. "U.S. Hispanics, meanwhile, were found to be exerting their shopping muscle online, spending more and making more purchases than the national average. "The ascent of so many mid-sized cities demonstrates that online shopping has become more mainstream than ever," said Patrick Gates , AOL's senior vice president of commerce, as quoted by The Washington Times. London's Guardian newspaper yesterday picked up on data from Jupiter Media showing that online shopping is brisk across the pond. "The number of people shunning the cold and crowded high street for the comfort of their computer screens is expected to send online spend soaring for the fourth successive Christmas this year," the newspaper said, in a report that focused on online shopping in Europe.

"Consumer spending on the internet during November and December will hit [pounds sterling]4.2bn [about $7 billion], a 46% increase on the [pounds sterling]3.15bn [roughly $5 billion] spent during the same period last year, figures from internet research group Jupiter Media show. ... While traditionally big online sellers such as CDs, books and computer games will all sell well this Christmas, Jupiter predicts that the biggest winners will be web-based grocery stores such as Tesco.com , Sainsbury 's and Ocado , the online supermarket backed by Waitrose ." There are two things that are certain in the modern world: spam and taxes. And since Congress found itself in session far longer than it anticipated this year, it tried to tackle both. In the case of spam, our elected officials agreed on a federal bill to crack down on unsolicited e-mail. Things didn't quite work out as easily on taxes -- the Senate tried but failed to pass a permanent ban on Internet access taxes.

The imminent spam law sounds like a good idea, but as The New York Times reported, there's rarely any kind of legislation that will please everyone: "Despite public demand for legislative relief, sponsors said the measure, which would take effect on Jan. 1, would not immediately cut off the deluge of junk e-mail messages that makes up more over half of all e-mail traffic." One of the biggest problems that Sen. Jon Corzine (D-N.J.) had with the bill, the Times wrote, was that people can't sue spammers who make their e-mail in-boxes a living hell. * The New York Times: Antispam Bill Passes Senate by Voice Vote (Registration required)

Washingtonpost.com offered a quick summary of what the bill does: "The legislation would let the Federal Trade Commission establish a national 'do-not-spam' list similar to the popular national 'do-not-call' list. It also outlaws several common practices that spammers use to disguise the origins of their e-mail, including using falsified return addresses. Violators could face up to five years in prison and as much as $6 million in fines." On the tax front, washingtonpost.com reported that several senators adamantly opposed extending the ban because they think it will add to the billion-dollar cash drain that is forcing every state to reconsider its funding priorities for next year: "They say that new language in the bill could be interpreted to make all kinds of Internet services tax-exempt, including online movie and music downloads. They also are worried about losing revenues to Internet-based telephone services, which are becoming more popular. The Los Angeles Times offered this quote from National Governors Association staffer David Quan : "There is a strong case made that the Internet is no longer a fledgling industry that needs to be protected and underwritten by the federal government. Whether state legislatures will take advantage of the Senate's inaction (they're not going to get to this again until early next year) and start taxing Internet access remains to be seen. One of my mottos has always been "work smarter...not harder". I guess that's why I never could hold a traditional/regular job down because that WAS definitely harder. I gave away my precious time and energy to earning huge dollars someone else collected in exchange for a few pennies on those dollars...what an idiot! How's that going to ever be able to take care of my three little ones?

the stress of all the above is just unbearable.

The current Matrix is in the Information Age. So he who controls/weilds information is king. The advent of the Internet makes the net the ultimate castle of information;ie,the ultimate library.
